Le chinchilla est apparu il y a 50 à 60 millions d’années, au cours de l’ère tertiaire, aussi appelé âge des mammifères. Originaire d’Amérique du Sud.

Alimentation du chinchilla
Il lui faut une alimentation équilibrée, riche en fibres car les troubles intestinaux sont responsables de 70% du taux de mortalité de cet animal. Une bonne alimentation est constituée de 70 à 80% de foin, d’aliments pour chinchilla, et de branches d’arbres fruitiers. Il faut éviter de lui donner des friandises sucrées qui peuvent provoquer un diabète.
Si l’on propose au chinchilla une alimentation à base de produits frais (fruits, salade, légumes.), cela provoquera chez lui des troubles intestinaux ou une dégénérescence progressive du foie, donc l’alimentation industrielle est préconisée.

Maître idéal :
Le chinchilla convient plus aux adultes car il est fragile et supporte mal les manipulations incessantes. En effet, les manipulations à outrance actionnent son moyen de défense, utile dans la nature. Il perd des touffes de poils ou une partie de sa queue pour éviter d’être attrapé par ses prédateurs. Ce réflexe s’appelle l’autonomie.
