Mâle ou femelle ?
On privilégiera les rats femelles car moins odorantes et agressives que les rats mâles, d’autant plus si le rat est destiné à être offert à un enfant.

Seul ou en couple ? Si vous souhaitez acheter un couple, deux femelles sont préférables à deux mâles car elles sont plus calmes que les mâles et elles mèneront ainsi une existence sans conflit. Attention si vous optez pour un couple constitué d’un mâle et d’une femelle : en peu de temps, les deux rats donneront naissance à de nombreuses portées qui généreront, à leur tour, d’autres portées ! C’est pourquoi le choix du sexe est primordial pour une espèce aussi prolifique que le rat.

Santé : Le rat est surtout sensible aux problèmes de peau et aux affections respiratoires. Il faut donc une très bonne hygiène de la cage et éviter les courants d’air ou sources de froid.
