L’âge a aussi une certaine importance et l’idéal est d’adopter un hamster âgé de 5 à 10 semaines. En effet, les animaux trop jeunes qui sont encore nourris au lait maternel pourraient rencontrer quelques difficultés à manger seuls. En revanche, les hamsters plus âgés qui ont grandi dans une animalerie et ne sont pas habitués à se laisser manipuler risquent de s’adapter moins facilement à la vie domestique

La famille la plus nombreuse des rongeurs est celle des Cricétidés (plus de 500 espèces), mais on en élève seulement cinq en qualité d’animaux de compagnie.
